I bought a computer that was originally installed with
Microsoft ME but it came with an upgrade for XP. I want
to format my hard drive and I have not done it before. I
am assuming that I have to reinstall ME, then go ahead
and upgrade to XP. However in my upgrade manual, it says
that XP uses a product activation system to only prevent
installing XP on more than one computer. Assuming I have
already activeated my version of XP once, will I be able
to do it again after I have formatted my hard drive?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

when you boot up your computer with the CD in, it will
give the option to format and re-install windows. if you
use that, then it should automatically check to make sure
that the version of windows being run is the same as the
one on the disk.

and just in case, i thought i'd let you know that if the
reason you are formatting is because of a problem with
windows, and not a virus or something of that sort, when
it asks what you want to do, there will be an option that
lets you re-install windows without touching the rest of
the stuff on your computer..

You can always legally reinstall XP as many times as you want on the _same_
system. There are 2 choices - go do your format and reinstall, and don't
bother to activate until you get Windows set up. Then go ahead and activate.
You may get an error message saying this copy has already been activated.
You should then get info to call MS where you can explain your situation,
they will compare with their records and see that you are installing on the
same CPU type with the same hardware attached, and you'll get the required
info to complete activation. Or, just wait 45 days from the time you last
activated XP before activating again. Their system is set to allow you to
reactivate a copy on the 46th day. Then you won't have any problems. But
keep in mind, if you activated yesterday, you can't just ignore the nag
balloon for 45 days - you'll have to contact MS to continue using XP past
the 30th day after installation.

By the way, don't install ME first. Just go do the XP install. It will ask
you to insert your WinME CD-ROM to prove that you are really upgrading from
XP. You'll end up with a much more stable system than if you install XP on
top of ME.

Others have answered your questions. What I'm wondering about is, Why
didn't the vendor who sold you the computer install Windows XP? Why did
he or she let it out the door with ME on it?

Was it some kind of non-standard vendor, like someone out of the
newspaper?
