Re-Installing XP Professional

I learned that the person that installed XP used a pirate copy. I am unable to install the update patch. I have purchased my own version of XP Professional and will be reinstalling the operating system. Is there anything I need to be careful of when reinstalling XP. Is there an easier way around fixing my problem without have to totally reinstall the operating system

I think you will need to re install because of xp activation proceedure.
