I am thinking about re-installing Windows. I have to separate harddrives.
1st one with 3 partitions and a 2nd larger one that I use for files and
pictures. Will re-installing Windows XP on the 1st one have any effect on
the other drive? And also how does one re-install programs like Norton that
were bought over the internet as a file and I have no disc? Thanks

Normally no. But, in computing, anything is possible! Make sure you have a
backup of your critical data first.

Presumably you still have the executable file that you downloaded? Make a
copy, and also a note of your key, then just re-install after the new
install of windows...

I am having a problem with my DVD and CD burners crashing when I try to open
my "quite large photo files" that I have burned to DVD & DVD/DL's. Both
burners are acting the same way. I open to view, the computer freezes then
when I cancel it, the whole computer screen goes blank but doesn't totally
reboot. I have done device checks both through "device manager" and by
manually checking the cables inside. The only thing I don't know how to do
is disable "autorun". I have been doing alot of reading here and elsewhere
as I am reluctant to take it to the local computer store repair place where
I bought the computer because their solution to everything is to wipe
everything and I don't trust them enough not to screw-up my second harddrive
where all my pictures and other files are. Could you advise and also
explain or send me a link to info on how to REPAIR install.
Thanks so much.

There's no end to all the evil that Norton can cause. McAfee can be just as
bad. The only way to get Norton out of your system entirely is to format.
There are plenty of free apps that are better and won't cause you grief.

I agree that too many places that do repair tend to just wipe and re-
install.

Regardless of whether or not a full re-install, or a repair install is
necessary, it would be best to physically remove the second drive from the
machine during whatever procedure is decided upon. If the drive is not even
in the PC, there is no way to do any harm to the data on it.
