I receive messages that some of my Windows XP files are
corrupted.

Can I re-install Windows over the existing installation,
or I need to reformat the hard disc and do the whole thing
from scratch?

Hi,

You can perform a repair installation on top of your Windows XP Pro,
Just stick your WinXP Pro cd into your computer and then make your computer
boot off the cd and then follow the instructions and there will be a point
where you can choose Repair the previous installation of your Windows.

Once you run the Repair Install you will have to reinstall SP1 and all
Critical Updates as they will be overwritten during the Repair Install.

It shouldn't take up significantly more space than the prior installation.
It will over-write files, not create a second copy.

Does the Repair Install take up too much disc space? or
it replaces existing files and therefore takes up very
little disc space???

And this will not affect the installed patches and
hotfixes downloaded from the Microsoft Download site,
including SP1?
