My OS is Windows XP Pro.

Recently I upgrade to IE8 from IE7, but do not find its features
satisfactory (e.g. Yahoo Finance gives tiny fonts in exchange rates). I did a
system restore to a previous date. Unfortunately, IE7 unable to show web
pages after the restoration. After clicking the Explorer, it will go off
automatically.

Any helps appreciate.

Running System Restore was a no-no!

See if you can undo that last System Restore. If successful, all you
need to do is uninstall IE8, which will leave you with IE7. You may do
this via Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs. If that doesn't work,
try the "alternative steps" outlined here:

[x-post to IE General]

Never EVER use System Restore to "undo" an IE upgrade, Windows Service Pack
or Update!!!

Uninstalling IE8 via Add/Remove Programs (cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700) would have automatically returned
the machine to the previous IE version (IE7, in your case).

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December
2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain
environment.

NB: There's a very good chance that you'll have to format & do a clean
install of WinXP in order to get any version of IE functional again.

Try using/clicking the Add/Remove Windows Components on the left pane of the
Add or Remove Programs window. In Windows Components Wizard that appears
uncheck Internet Explorer if its checked to uninstall it or check it if its
uncheck to reinstall it then click the "Next" button below.

In IE8 to increaese the size of the fonts hold down control and move the
mouse scroll wheel forward. Or click on the "Compatibility button"

Hello! Everyone:

Thanks for all the valuable advices.

This is what I did to reinstall IE7 after following all your advises:

1. In Cmd.exe, invoke %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe to uninstall
IE7.

2. After rebooting, go to Add/Remove Software/Windows Component to
reinstall the IE.

I am fortunate that I do not have to reformat my hard drive.

I would further suggest that in the System Restore page, there should be a
line to warn the users that System Restore cannot be used to uninstall, IE,
SPs and Updates.

Using System Restore was a bad mistake. See the other replies you
received.

I wanted to add the following: You were concerned about the size of
the fonts in Yahoo Finance. On almost all web sites, regardless of the
version of IE you are using, you can change the size of the font by
holding down the CTRL key and scrolling the mouse wheel. One way makes
it bigger, the other smaller.

This is a Windows standard, and works, not only in IE, but in many (if
not most) applications, even non-Microsoft ones.

#1 may have uninstalled IE7, but #2 did not reinstall IE, it only made IE
available again.

Advice would be appreciated:
Novice user, XP SP2.

Dislike IE8. It won't let me use several on-line support services, and have
trouble completing on-line purchases, etc.
I can indeed locate IE8 in Programs list, but NOT IE7
If I "Uninstall", will IE7 magically reappear, or will I be left with a PC
unable to connect with the internet at all?
[don't care about losing favorites, tabs, etc: resetting will be worth the
hassle...]

Providing IE7 is on the computer , it will " magically reappear " .

And if it doesn't, presumably she could download IE7 (the full installer
file) on another computer, and copy that exe file over to her main one, and
install it.
