Re-Installed Windows XP Home Edition

I had a series of hardware and software problems and I am in the process of
re-installing my Windows XP Home Edition. I doing an in-place install (I am
installing it in the same partition that the old operating system is in
installed). I have a large number of applications installed on this system
and would like to avoid re-installing them if possible. This was very simple
in Windows 95 and Windows 98, does Windows XP work the same way?
If not is there any way I can avoid re-installing some or all of these
programs?
Thanks in advanced.
