I'll try to make this short. Problems started with missing windows file. Used
the original disk to re-install windows(wasn't even open). Now, when you go
to device manager there is a question mark on other devices and everything
thing in there is missing the drivers. When trying to do windows update, it
wants to restart, but when it does it will show you the xp screen and then at
the point it usually goes to the windows screen, it locks up. I have to power
down and hit F2 and select enable vga mode. I am working on a Dell Inspiron
E1705 laptop. I have a feeling it has something to do with the video drivers
but don't know how to fix this.

Hello Stepahanie:

Did you do a fresh install or 'repair' install of Windows XP? XP Home,
Pro or Media Center Edition? Did you notice if your system also has
media with drivers and other misc. applications?

If you haven't installed the drivers yet and the drivers media can't be
located, go to:

<http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/>

Please post a follow-up to this thread with a progress update.

Pete

Check to see if you received a Dell driver's CD with your laptop and use it
to install the drivers for your hardware.

I tried a fix first but it did not work. Had to do a fresh install. It is
Windows XP Pro.
I read somewhere that it could be trying to default to some video driver
that is not on the computer. That it does this when you re-install windows.
Can this be what is going on?

So what do I do? I have all the disks. I tried uninstalling the video
controller from device manager. I restarted the computer( had to do it in VGA
mode) it said found new hardware insert disk with drivers. I did and it found
nothing. This is making me nuts.
