There is some corruption to .dll files associated with
IE6 and am advised to re-install Windows XP (Home). My
concern is what to do about all the updates; 11
Windows "Hotfixes"; SP1 and 2 "Hotfixes" SP2. Should I
uninstall these before tackling the repair of Windows and
then re-download and install them again afterwards.

Hi Doug,

You don't need to uninstall the hotfixes, and when the repair installation
is done you WILL need to reinstall them. See this link on doing a repair
installation, which will preserve your data, programs, and user accounts:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

You do know that there are two other things you can try first, right?

1) Start/run "sfc /scannow" and this will verify the integrity of the system
file set. It will prompt to replace missing or corrupted files. You will
need your WinXP CD, or need to know where your I386 folder is located as
well as the ServicePackFiles folder.

2) Reinstall Internet Explorer. Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options/View
tab, set it to "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected
operating system files [recommended]". Also uncheck "Hide extensions for
known file types". Then, open Windows Explorer from Start/All Programs and
go to the C:\Windows\Inf folder. Locate the ie.inf file, right-click it and
choose install. You may need to either insert your WinXP CD or know where
your I386 folder is located on the hard drive. You may also need to know
where the \ServicePackFiles folder is (usually under the Windows directory).

Hi Rick,

Thanks for that. I have run sfc/scannow without it
bringing up any error messages but I get quite a few so-
called run-time-errors when I'm on line. My Windows
installation is OEM so I have only a recovery disc. I
have tried to download a pristine version of IE6 from
microsoft by first tweaking the register key to say that
IE is not installed. That lets me complete the download
OK but when I try to install it I get the
message "Software has not passed the Windows Logo testing
to verify its compatibility with XP" and the installation
aborts. Very frustrating. Are you able to suggest what
might be going on here?

Hi Doug,

The second proccedure I listed will allow you to reinstall IE. You do not
(and should not) use a downloaded version.
