windows xp disc or the OEM disc that had ME on it? and
then reinstall xp?

Hi Steve,

Boot the WinXP CD, choose a new installation, you can format as part of the
install routine.

You use the XP CD. Tell it you want a clean installation and
follow the prompts. It will prompt you to insert your Windows Me
CD as proof of ownership of a previous version. Just do so and
all proceeds normally.

The OEM one will probably not be recognised as evidence,. so cannot be
shown to setup as such if you start by booting the CD. The approach I
would use (if you *really* need to format, and find a repair
reinstallation not satisfactory) is

Run the CD from the existing system. Enter Install, change Upgrade to
New Install, then when it asks you to confirm where, you can hit ESC and
get the chance to select the current partition, delete it, and create
a new RAW one, going on to format it as part of the setup

I think that this will then have detected that it was a legitimate
upgrade, and not even ask for the previous system's CD as evidence, but
am not certain on that

If it does not work out you will have to reinstall the ME and then
either upgrade, or run the XP from the ME system in the way given above
- that *will* detect the legitimate eligibility
