I have a lapop that came with XP pre-installed.

I didnt get a copy of XP on a cd, all i got was a
recovery cd, which restores XP to a "from the shop"
configuration.

I also have an XP cd which i bought to upgrade my desktop.

Can u use the "upgrade" XP cd to doan inplace reinstall?

The upgrade CD requires that you have either
a qualifying system installed, or, if installing "clean"
the qualifying media so that you can provide it during the install.

When you say inplace, are you talking about a repair of the
existing system leaving, essentially, all your data intact?
If so, do a repair install using the XP upgrade you purchased.

Or are you talking about formatting the hardrrive and reinstalling
XP from scratch? If this is what you want, you'll need to show
the qualifying media, and your "recovery cd" almost certainly will
not work. If you have an old copy of windows 98 or ME, laying around
that will work fine... you just need to insert the cdrom when asked
for.

Yep, its the former. My laptop copy of XP is well
corrupted, and my laptop has a laughable choice of
drives.... a DVD rom and a floppy. This makes backing up
intersting. So i need to keep as many files and apps as
possible, so i cant format and do a clean re-install.
