I'd like someone to help me with a step-by-step procedure
on how to re-install Win XP after formatting the hd (the
pc was running earlier with Win XP Professional).

Again, if I decide to buy a new pc and wish to install my
WInXP Professional, then what steps do I follow,
especially with respect to license.

Thanks,
Naushir

Hi Naushir,

If you've already formatted, all you need to do is boot the CD and run
setup. I would recommend though that you let the installer format the drive,
using a third party drive tool to format the drive ahead of time can
interfere with the installer.

If your system cannot boot from a CD, boot a Win9x startup floppy with CD
support, then run the winnt.exe file in the \I386 folder to begin.

Once the installer is started, it's merely a matter of following the
prompts.

Greetings --

1) Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered
the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

2) Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

The other answer although some what vague for a newbie
will help. I do want to point out one thing though. If you
install XP Pro on a machine you now have and then purchase
a new machine you will need to purchase a new license or
copy of XP Pro as well. The Windows Product Activation is
tied to one machine only and cannot be installed on
multiple machines. Well not legally (so Microsoft claims)
anyway. IF on the other hand you don't intend on using the
old machine that you have installed XP on then you could
wait for four months and purchase a new machine and
reinstall and activate XP on it. Microsoft, I am told,
purges their WPA records every four months. Keep smiling.
