I want to re-install XP but when I put my disk in I'm told that the disk is
an older version of Windows. Is this because I have SP2 installed? If I want
to continue with the installation all current settings will be lost. And, to
boot from the CD to do a new install. If I do the new install then do all
updates and install SP2 again will I be OK or am I missing something?

Hi,

Take your older CD and download the stand-alone (network) version of SP2.
Then follow the directions here to create a slipstream CD:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm
Once created, use this disk to do the repair installation. Otherwise you
will be starting from scratch, unless of course that is what you want to do.

If you want to do a Repair Install (which apparently you do) as opposed
to a Clean Install, you need to slipstream your original XP cd with
Service Pack 2. This is quite easy to do. I like Autostreamer for this,
but there are other methods. Here are some links to help you:

Yes, buit it doesn't matter because if you're trying to do a clean
reinstallation, you're doing it wrong.

If I want to continue with the installation all current
settings will be lost. And, to boot from the CD to do a new install.

That's the correct way to do a clean reinstallation. Just boot from the
Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to accomplish this)
and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the existing
partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

If I do the new install then do all updates and install SP2 again
will I be OK or am I missing something?

That's correct, but install SP2 before any other updates; some of them will
require that SP2 be installed. Alternatively you could create a slipstreamed
XP CD incorporating SP2 and install with that. Then you wouldn't have to
reinstall SP2. See http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=7262
