Hi,
-The computer came originally with SP2
-SP3 was installed a few months ago
-If we run SFC /scannow, it will ask for the Windows CD (Having SP2 on
it)

Will it be needed to re-install SP3 after running SFC /scannow using
the Windows XP SP2 CD?

I'm asking, since if SFC uses the old files on the SP2 CD to repair
files, it might replace new files that were installed by SP3, no?

SFC could "fail" as it will ask for the SP3 CD. You will need to
"integrate" SP3 onto your SP2 install CD. This is known as
"slipstreaming."

Well, it didn't fail when I did the SFC on Windows XP SP3 Using a SP2
CD. It did fail at first but because the dvd drive was faulty, I
think. I've copied the i386 folder from the CD to C:\ and then I've
set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
\SourcePath to C:\ in the registry. I then restarted and executed SFC /
scannow without a glitch.

So now do the computer have SP2 on the harddrive instead of SP3? When
I do a run Winver it says SP3...

That's why I'm wondering if I should re-install SP3...?

I cannot give you a definitive answer. However, here are some thoughts.

System File Checker checks the integrity of system drivers. It will only
replace a driver if it finds a driver is missing or corrupt. It only
looks for a replacement in these circumstances. The greater majority of
the drivers must have been OK or your system would not have been
functioning. It would be helpful to know what problem caused you to look
to System File Checker for a solution.

The working set of drivers are contained in the folder located at
c:\windows\system32\drivers and more in c:\windows\system32\.. You can
identify microsoft system drivers from others by the file version. All
the system drivers are 5.1.2600.xxxx and from the SP3 update are
5.1.2600.5512. The SP2 version are from memory is 5.1.2600.2180 and
files were created on 24? August 2004. You should also have numbers
higher than 5512 as some files have been updated since SP3 was released.

In order to easily check your drivers you probably need to can change
the view settings in Windows Explorer by selecting View, Choose details,
and check the box before File Version. Make sure you have previously
have selected View, Details as otherwise you will not get the right
result.. .
