This is driving me crazy. I am running win2k pro. And I am
trying to re-install some HP external tape backup
software. But I keep getting a message that "Windows
2000 "plug and play" has previously detected and installed
an external tape drive. You will need to use Device
Manager to uninstall the device "VID_04E6PID80000002"
listed under "other devices" and restart your system
before your external tape drive will work"
Of course there is no "other devices". I can run regedit
and find 9 of the VID keys but can't touch them (access
denided) even under administrator.; I am a stand alone
machine - no network at all. Regedt32 can't seem to find
any such entry. Regedit shareware finds the keys, but
can't edit them - acess denined again. What am I doing
wrong ?????????

To display hidden devices, non-Plug and Play devices, and devices not
attached to the computer (commonly known as "ghosted" or "phantom" devices)
From a command prompt;

set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
then
start devmgmt.msc

Then, use Device Manager to remove or reconfigure these devices. Do not edit
the registry.

Thanks for reply.
Only command prompt I could think of in win2000 was in
safe mode. I did what you said and did indeed get "other
devices". There were 4 entries: 3 just a greyed out ? and
4th listed as a PCI serial port????? Under properties they
said "device not present, not working properly, etc (code
24)
Should I uninstall these? I don't see anything that I feel
is obviously my old device nor do I see an VID# at all.
Thanks for help,
Rich

What I meant was to; Start|Run|cmd.exe

Well, that is certainly faster and easier way to get to
it. Thanks.
But I still get those 4 "?"'s under Other Devices and all
say that "they ..not present, not working, ... code 24"
Should I delete these? Is ther a way to back this up
before hand?
Thanks, Rich

Yes, delete them. If you wish you can backup the registry prior to doing so.
You can run Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Backup, then choose ERD, then
if you check the box for "Also backup....", then the reg will also be backed
up to
%windir%\repair\RegBack
leaving the
%windir%\repair\
directory files intact as original installation.

This link may also help.

Well, I did delete them, but I still can not install HP
software. I get the same message about win2000 plug & play
and VID_..., needing to delete them first, etc. The
VID ... key still doesn't show up in regedt32, but still
does in regedit!
Any other ideas ?????
Thanks, Rich

Just wondering if you might have also missed the menu option in
Device Manager: View, Show hidden devices
and then checked inside the "Non Plug and Play devices "tree".

Do backup the registry in advance.
Look only to things that are or can be reasonabley assummed to be
connected to your specific device issue.
