I have a problem with my current MM 2.1 isntall. Something is corrupted and
the first time I try to save a movie the program stops responding and I have
to use Task Manager to get out of it. The second time I run the program I get
video artifacts of left on the screen when ever I open a pull down menu and
select an option. IT remains on the screen until the next option is picked.
Refreshing the screen gets rid of it until the next option is picked. Once I
exit MM, the problem remains. If I click on a icon and select something from
the right click menu, that options remains on the screen. The only way to get
rid of the problem is to restart the computer. This all started after a file
I was processing in MM a month or two ago lockedup my system.

I've been looking for a copy of the Movie Maker 2.1 inntaller. I found one
for 2.0 but not 2.1. Is there a mm21enu.exe file out there anywhere? Or do I
have to unininstall SP3 and SP2 and reinstall SP2 and MM2.1 then SP3 to fix
my problem?

Uninstalling SP3 and reinstalling SP2 would
be one option. That may not be the fix you are
seeking though.

Maybe the following info will offer some ideas:

===
The following steps previously offered by
Carlos, MCSE are supposed to reinstall
MM2.1.

(you'll need your Windows XP Disk)

1. Go to C:\Windows\inf
2. Right click on Moviemk.inf and click on Install
3. When it asks for your Windows XP cd put
it in and browse to the I386 folder. Click OK

Also try pointing to the SP2 file.

I didn't have a i386 folder in my Windows/Inf folder, but there was one in
the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder where a copy of the moviemkr.exe
and inf file were located. I ran the inf file there and it appeared to
install MovieMaker but my problem remains. The first launch of Movie Maker
stops responding as soon as I try to save a movie. The second launch runs and
seemly works fine, but the blue highlighted items from the pulldown options
menues in Movie Maker remain on the screen instead of clearing once the
option has been selected. Any such options that appear on the desktop once
out of Movie Maker also remain on the desktop screen until I restart my
computer than things are back to normal.

It looks like SP3 comes with Movie Maker 2.1 too, but I didn't get my SP3
install off a CD but rather through the automatic updates.

I'll either have to try reinstalling SP3 or living with it the way things
are now. Oh, well....

Did you try all the articles I posted?

Also you may have an issue with your video driver.

Try reducing your Graphics Hardware Acceleration
as per the instructions in the following article.

(272193) PI: How to Troubleshoot
Graphics Issues
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=272193
(scroll down to:
Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP)

If it improves the issue, you need to search the
support website of your Video adapter's mfg. for
an updated video driver.

Pretty much. I did the steps recommended by Wojo and Dean but no change. I
don't think the top link relates to the particular problem I'm having.

My video driver is "new", a month old and it has been updated since my
problem with MM began so that's not going to fix the problem either.

Thanks for the help.

Just as an experiment...why not try reducing your
Graphics Hardware Aceleration anyway?

If it doesn't make a difference just move the slider
back to Full.
