Hello,
I am currently running XP Professional SP2 and IE
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 and for some reason now, when I go to
certain sites it is telling me that I am not running the 128-bit
encryption/security to gain access to the site. I tried to follow all of the
troubleshooting techniques on Microsoft, but nothing seems to work. I even
tried to re-install Windows XP and that didn't help either. Is there anyway
to un-install IE 6.0 and then re-install it. Any help would be apprecited.
Thanks,
Bob
P.S. - this was working fine up to about 2 days ago.....

To check your "User Agent":
Paste the below into the Address Bar and view the output:

javascript:navigator.userAgent

Don,
I got it to work, by placing the site into the Trusted Sites under
security. I also performed the check to see if my "User Agent" is correct,
by pasting: javascript:navigator.userAgent in the address bar, and the
results are as follows:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)
Now is this correct? and if not how can I fix it. When I checked the
registry, it is currently showing: User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE
6.0; Win32)"

Again, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

In fact that page is also an important diagnostic.

Don,
I got it to work, by placing the site into the Trusted Sites under
security. I also performed the check to see if my "User Agent" is correct,
by pasting: javascript:navigator.userAgent in the address bar, and the

Ignore that one. It's obsolete. The actual User-Agent is built from strings
which are located separately in other parts of the registry. One odd thing
about yours is that you aren't showing any .Net support. Otherwise I think
that this shows that you have the IE implemented by XPsp2.

Did you try the FiddlerTool diagnostic page that Don pointed out too?
It would show if the remote site is receiving the same User-Agent string
as you are showing should be sent. If that is not happening it would indicate
that something between your IE and the site is interfering with the
User-Agent string as sent by IE. A possible cause of that could be
a misconfigured firewall or proxy server (for example.)

BTW this is mostly a FYI. I suspect your symptom will be due to sites
misinterpreting the symptoms caused by stricter security settings on your
Internet zone than they were expecting. Etc. Putting the site into the
Trusted zone will have had the same effect as loosening your Internet
zone settings (e.g. by changing them to Default Level).

Again, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

Robert,
When I go to the link http://www.fiddlertool.com/useragent.aspx, it
displays the following information:

Your browser sent the following headers:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Connection=Keep-AliveAccept=image/gif, image/x-xbitmap, image/jpeg,
image/pjpeg, application/x-shockwave-flash, application/vnd.ms-powerpoint,
application/vnd.ms-excel, application/msword, */*Accept-Encoding=gzip,
deflateAccept-Language=en-usHost=www.fiddlertool.comUser-Agent=Mozilla/4.0
(compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASPNET's HTTPBrowserCapabilities object reports that based on the
User-Agent, your Browser has the following capabilities:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Type = IE6
Name = IE
Version = 6.0
Major Version = 6
Minor Version = 0
Platform = WinXP
Is Beta = False
Is Crawler = False
Is AOL = False
Is Win16 = False
Is Win32 = True
Supports Frames = True
Supports Tables = True
Supports Cookies = True
Supports VBScript = True
Supports JavaScript = True
Supports Java Applets = True
Supports ActiveX Controls = True
SecEnhanced.

Now are these the normal settings I should be getting, because I really
don't want to degrade my security settings when going to the site I am
experiencing problems with, which is www.capitalone.com.

Thanks again,
Bob

Bob,

FYI, your output from fiddlertool matches mine (xp-pro-sp2 with ie6-sp2), *with exception of .NET update (which I believe Robert was pointing out). Yes, your User Agent string is good.

If I were in your shoes, I'd place the bank site into the Trusted sites list in IE. See if it works.
Otherwise, review http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813444 , as Don suggested.
Insure your IE allows SSL 2 / SSL 3. Shows 128-bit encryption capability.
review kb's other items.

HTH

Maurice,
OK, I placed the bank link in the Trusted Sites and everything works
fine. So I guess there is nothing else that I can do? If not, thanks for
all your help...

Bob
