If I take out the battery will the bios return to a factory default state -
and if so how long will it take to do so?

This on an ASUS P4800 with P4 - which refuses to boot... - completely
catatonic.

I want to try to get it to boot from a floppy but it does nothing at all.
Not even POST codes beeps.

Removing the battery for a few minutes, with power unpluged, will do that.
There should also be a jumper to clear CMOS settings.

If you pull the power cord out of the system.Find and use the clear
CMOS jumper(See Manual) then it's instant.
HTH :)

That hasn't fixed it I'm afraid. Still have a dead system. Was working OK
before. Then started giving some vocal POST messages complaining about
overclocking - which I'd never attempted. Now no verbal POST - nno beeps -
nothing at all.

Doesn't even try to boot from floppy..

What do I test next?

If you have two RAM sticks try each separately in different slots.
