RE: how to reduce size of pie chart area

In "graph edit mode" use the left top dropdown to choose chart area

Format > selected chart area >patterns tab
Set area to "none" (its maybe on automatic )
 
You have to resize the plot area of the chart (it's a rectangle around the
pie, and it's often hard to select on pie charts especially -- so I usually
use the "chart part" dropdown on the toolbar) to more closely match the
chart area. Then you resize the chart area by dragging the herringboned
edges of the chart while it's activated. (Actually, you should resize the
chart area and then resize the plot area.)

I don't recommend dragging the edges of the chart when you're back on the
slide (and the chart isn't activated) because that will often distort the
chart and you'll end up with wonky fonts. [Wonky is a technical term. :-) ]
