Don.

Hello to you all,
I have just installed XP home and frequently
get the XP version of the "The blue screen of death" even though I
have very few applications yet installed. I want to remove all the
data by reformatting and start again by installing a clean version of
XP.

XP wont let me format while it is running and Win98 naturally can't
see the drive.

Where do I go from here? Until yesterday I have had no experience
with the NTFS system. Can I make up a startup disk with the bare
essentials to reformat NTFS then let the CD installation do it's job?

Thanks for your patience.

Donald

The xp CD has a format process on it.

Load the CD and follow the instructiions.

You can do a fresh load of xp from there.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD and follow the prompts for a
clean installation. It will do the reformat for you.

Thanks everyone, however booting with the CD was the first thing I
tried but during the bootup it read the cd offered install as the only
useful option, dithered about then proceeded to do a normal XP load
with no further prompts at all.

Once XP is loaded, the CD will self boot other programs and seems to
operate perfectly otherwise.

I did not persist as I thought that XP would not install over itself.
Guess that old habits die hard as I am used to manually formatting and
partitioning first to be sure that at least most of the lurking
nasties have gone.

Thanks again, I'll try once more and see what happens. Your help is
very much appreciated.

Greetings --

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
