Do you have calculation set for manual (I didn't think so).
Maybe xl is calculating, but just gives a false message:

(But lots of formulas can make xl slow down. Have you considered setting
calculation to manual and calculating only when you need to. Also, you may want
to take a look a Data|Pivottables. It might be a nice alternative than building
formulas.)
