I had 2 computers networked together both with windows xp
home edition and was able to utilize the file and printer
sharing service.

I recently had to re-format my hard drive and re-install
windows xp on my laptop. I am no longer able to share
files or the printer connected to my desktop. I clicked
on the setup home or small office network link to re-
establish the link between both computers using the same
work group name "MSHOME" with no luck.

Can someone help me with this please ?

Hi Bill Oldson,

The basics are that both machines need to be on the same
workgroup and have the same subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
If you have any firewalls running especially the XP
firewall disable or remove while troubleshooting. The XP
firewall should be disabled on local area networks. It's
only for direct connections to the Internet.

have you installed file and printer sharing, in Network
properties click new (or is it add?).

Check to see if the file and printer sharing service is installed on your
computer.

(1) Go into network connections in the control panel and right click on your
connection between the 2 computers
(2) See if "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is in that list
and ticked, if it's not ticked, tick it, if it's not present click install,
go to service, then microsoft and select it for install.

Hope this solves it
