Re-editing a wedding video

I am helping a friend by re-cutting their wedding video. The problem I'm
having is it was originally cut in Movie maker, but when I import the project
and try to make any slip edits audio and video are cut together. The long
story short I want to add transitions to the video but the audio is
following. Is this a flaw in the system or do I need to start the whole thing
from scratch. It seems I cannot do a video only edit.

Hi Jennifer,
I think the best way to accomplish what your trying to do is to mute the
original audio (right click the audio and select mute) and drag another copy
of the video clip to the "Audio/Music" portion of the timeline. The program
will recognize the clip as audio and it will not be affected by splitting
the video clips.
