Hi i have outlook express 6, and a long time ago i did that set up: 'split
sending a photo into smaller packets' since my provider virgin puts a limit
on the size of the attachment that i can send. (i forget exactly how i set
that up that).

yesterday i sent a photo to someone, who has emailed me back to ask, how do
i re-combine the photo that you sent me?

any suggestions please on what to tell them to do. thanks

Within Outlook Express press F1 for Help. Choose the 'Search' tab
and search for 'Combine multipart messages'.

many thanks. in help i got:
To combine multipart messages

Sometimes, when a large message (one that contains pictures, audio files, or
other large objects) is sent in e-mail or posted to a newsgroup, it is
broken into smaller files and displayed as several messages. You can combine
the messages to recreate the original message and display it in Outlook
Express.

1.. Select all of the messages that are part of the original message (each
part will usually have a number).
2.. On the Message menu, click Combine and Decode.
3.. If needed, reorder the parts in the correct sequence.
Note

a.. After you combine and decode the message, it is displayed in a
separate window. The message will continue to be displayed in the message
list as several smaller messages. To save the recreated message, on the File
menu, click Save As.
b..
the messages were in the correct sequence, but after clicking combine and
decode nothing happened. the photo was in jpg format and was 1.72 MB when
sent. after the combine and decode the messages had the attachment icons
'changed' for example one was titled ATT002299 DAT(794KB). so something's
changed, but the three email attachments are not combining into one .
..........sigh.

Are you sure the size limit is so small that you have to split? Most
JPEGs are going to be under 1 MB, most less than half that.

I suggest a better email client; anything *other than* OE or
Incredimail.

jw 1111,
I don't think your friend, received all the parts of the file. So the Combining & Decoding was not complete.

1. How was the *.JPG file created? Was it created when through a scanner or a direct download from a digital camera? If it was done by either method. You should open the file into a photo editing program, Then resave it using a different file name. The file size resulting from resaving it in the photo editing program should be significantly smaller than the original "scanned or downloaded" image. You would probably only need to reduce the file down to about 150KB or less in size, to keep the quality of the image.

2. What was the size that you set for breaking up the original file? If you sent a 1.72 MB file, with the added overhead of approx. 40%, the size of the message was about, 2.40MB. A file size of 1.72 (2.40) MB may exceed the mail services allowance for file transfer, even if it is broken up. Some ISP's will not allow a file this big to be "SENT" or "RECEIVED", it has nothing to do with OE. It is a way that they choose to prevent media (such as song or movie) files to be shared. Especially if his ISP's mailbox, is 2.0 MB or less, and there was no other mail in any other folders in his mailbox.

If you need to send that the file in the originally condition (1.72MB), you might consider uploading to the web, and letting your friend download it from there. Many ISP's offer a person, the ability to create personal web pages with photo albums. Also you can set up a Yahoo Acct just to share photos. But be aware there may also be a limit on the size of a file to be uploaded to their service.
