Your question as phrased is confusing. You can't delete a port, since that's
a hardware item. If the port is on an add-in card, removing the crad should
remove the port - that is, W2K will not find it. Is that what you've done?
In that case, you may have just discovered another aspect of W2K's refusal to
change its mind about hardware -- a "feature" which also makes moving an
existing W2K system to a new machine a PITA. It may be possible to "delete"
the port by editing the registry. Have you tried that?

You can delete printers, that is, you can uninstall them. Is that what you
are trying to do? If so, W2K's refusal to uninstall is a mystery to me, too.

Seem to have 12 Com ports in use - is this a glitch?

Till recently I was using
  • Com 1 (serial cable connected to one Windows CE HPC) and
  • what appeared as 'Com 8' (a serial-to-USB converter; the USB socket plugged into the PC and the other end connected to the serial port on a second Windows CE HPC - this was great for my purposes. Don't ask!).
All of a sudden the second connection is not working (ie: when I try to sync, it doesn't detect a second port). The only recent hardware change was I've just installed a PCI combo card - with three USB2 and two Firewire ports).

In Device Manager, everything looks fine, no conflicts. The combo card is bedded down okay and the converter (showing as 'Prolific USB-to-Serial Com Port(Com11)') also shows no problem.

I was puzzled why the converter device has been remapped to 'Com 11' and suspect this is the problem.

When I click on 'Port Settings/Advanced' for the (converter) device, it shows most of Com Ports 1 to 12 are 'In use' - but not Com 11 nor Com 8.

Q1. Why are so many Com ports apparently in use - does this look feasible or does it suggest a glitch? Q2. If a glitch ... what can I do to (somehow) "delete" the superfluous ports?
