From around a dozen two decades ago, to just 3 now. Is it any wonder
why the prices of hard drives aren't falling anymore? It's got nothing
to do with floods in Thailand, those happened nearly 2 years ago.

The price competition has stopped, and now you'll see that the capacity
competition has stagnated too. I previously thought that SSD's will
catch upto hard drives in about 10 years, I now think it'll be in about
5 years, possibly as fast as 3 years from now!

This is turning into a buggy-whip industry. The last companies still
producing horse buggy whips, just as cars are taking over the world.

They are, actually.

Wrong, as always.
those happened nearly 2 years ago.

Doesn't mean that those factorys are churning out
drives at the same rate they did before the floods tho.

Not a chance, you watch.

You're completely off with the ****ing fairys, as always.

Please explain what you mean.

One year ago, the typical 2-TB 5400-RPM HDD cost 60-70 euros.
Today, the typical 2-TB 5400-RPM HDD cost 100-110 euros, and
these prices have been stable for 3 months.

I meant what I said, the prices have dropped since the floods.

That's just because the euro has gone down the pan in the last 3 months.

When priced in USD, the best prices for 2TB and 3TB
drives have dropped substantially in the last 6 months.

Agreed, i can now get 2TB WD drives again around the $80 stateside now and 3TB
for around $129

We've actually seen some crossover on $/GB with those drives in some markets
too.

It's true that HDD prices have indeed come down from their local max
in Q4 2011. However, they are still higher than pre-flood.

In the summer 2011, the EUR oscillated between 1.39 and 1.48 USD.
Thus 60 EUR = 83-89 USD.

Today, the EUR hovers around 1.25 USD.
Thus 100-110 EUR = 125-137 USD.

In the euro zone, cheap 2-TB disks are still 50% more expensive now
than they were in the summer 2011, considering prices in USD.
(75% more expensive considering prices in EUR).

Really?! The cheapest 2-TB internal drives from Newegg cost 120 USD.
Do you have a link to 80 USD for 2-TB?

Notice the problem with the product?

There is no problem with that product.
It is Hitachi--or it was. Now WD--or will be.

Irrelevant to the fact that you get a lot
more than just the hard drive for $80
Plus, this is an external 2TB drive, not an internal drive.

So you get more than just the drive.
Discontinued or clearance? Most likely. Warranty by who?

WD, because they bought that operation.
How long? 30-30 warranty (30-ft or 30 sec, whichever comes first)?

You'll end up completely blind if you don't watch out.
Hitachi or WD? Doesn't say....

Who cares what they say, legally WD has to honor
the warranty because they bought that operation.
Ships direct from mfr--RIIIIGHT.....

No reason why it cant.

Sorry, but the only one that shows up with the $80 price is actually
for this CCD camera
http://compare.ebay.com/like/150826999778?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&_lwgsi=y&cbt=y

Sorting on price and ignoring the fake entry (the actual Hitachi drive
under that 80 dollar listing goes for 210 dollars) the next lowest
entry is the 2nd one from Bacucountry for $108.79. That's definitely
down from the high after the the floods but still not down to the lows
we saw before the floods. Chances are the prices may never hit that
low since we don't have as many competitors now along with the SSDs
starting to move in on the lower capacity drives.

The bigger problem is that it's $104.89, not $80.

Rod, the lowest price from your original Google listing showed only $91,
not bad, but certainly not $80. Then that specific Hitachi external
product you displayed from SeaBoom shows $104.89 -- after a $96.10
discount! Still not $80, BTW.
