I have made a table with addresses for a mailing list. My first
column has both first and last name in it, second column has street
address, third column has city, and fourth column has zip code.

I'm hoping there is a way to sort by last name without having to
separate it out into a column of its own (in WordPerfect we used to
code it as "-1" to make it sort this way).

In order to sort by last name, do I have to separate out the last name
into a column of its own?

Thanks for any help.

You *can* split the columns (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/SplitFirstNameLastName.htm), but if
each name has only a first name and a last name, you can sort by Word 2. If
there are middle initials or names in some cases, you can make these into a
single "first name" by replacing the space between with a nonbreak space
(Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar).

Thank you, Suzanne -- but I can't find any ability to sort by Word 2.
When I "select all" in my table, and then "Table" and "Sort" - the
only options I have are "column" and "text."

Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way -- is there some other way to
make just a simple address list and then sort it by last name? I do
not need to merge anything - it's not for mail/merge - it's only just
for making mailing labels.

Thanks.

If the list is plain text you will certainly get a Word 2 option. In tables
it's a little trickier. You have to select the column you want to sort. Then
in the Sort dialog, click the Options... button. In the Sort Options dialog
click the radio button for Other and type a space. OK out and back to the
Sort dialog. You'll now find that Word 1 and Word 2 have been added to the
"Using" list.

Ta-Da!!!! LOL - thanks again, Suzanne -- it certainly did show up
just as you said it would. Now, this "process" makes absolutely no
sense to me, but I found I had to give up understanding "why" when I
began using MSWord <vbg>!!!!!!!!!!

Very much appreciate your help once again! :o))
