RE-activate windows not working

Using xp, i've changed the hard drive configuration a few times (like adding a 2nd one then taking it away), and added a new cd burner twice, and added memory once
Now XP wants me to reactivate and i've got two days left to reactivate windows (at it's logon prompt) but the reactivation program won't start, and the tray icon also just disappears when clicked
I've fully checked for viruses/spware etc. but has anyone else got any suggestions before i reinstall windows again
 
just call the toll free number the activation windows provides and explain
to the microsoft tech what has happened. he will give you an activation
code that works.

same thing happened to me after major hardware upgrades and they promptly
gave me a new activation code.
