I've read lots of threads, and I hope I am getting this right, bu
before I try everything, I want input on whether what I'm doing sound
right.

1. Have WinXP Pro notebook at home (1 of 4) sitting behind a Linksy
router connected to Comcast via DHCP.
a. I have to enable/forward port 3389 in the router to the specifi
IP of the notebook (192.168.1.104), correct?

2. I have a VPN that I can enable if needed on the notebook, whic
gives me a specific IP within my company's domain.
a. From work, I should be able to use that specific IP (VP
provided) if port 3389 is open/forwarded to access the notebook
correct? Do I use the DHCP IP or the assigned VPN IP when I configur
the Router?

3. I've read about DHCP servers that assign static names to you
assigned IP. Would I need one of those in the above-mentione
scenario?

TIA,
John

Yes, if you want to connect to this machine remotely.

You would forward to the private address of the machine. Don't use
any VPN assigned addresses...

No.

I can't see the IP even with no-ip setup.

I have the router (Linksys wireless) setup to forward port 3389 an
port 80 to 192.168.1.104, with both TCP and UDP checked, and I'v
enabled them both. I've setup no-ip to give my IP (which is dynamic
but hasn't changed in a couple of days now) a name. From anothe
computer at home from behind the router I can ping the name and lo
onto the notebook with Remote Desktop using the name, not IP. However
from work I cannot ping the name or the IP itself. Which explains wh
I can't connect to it.

What could be preventing me from being able to see the ip assigned fro
Comcast and named by no-ip?

Rgds,
John
