RC2, Remote Desktop Broken?

Spent the best part of this evening trying to connect to my other Vista
machine using RDP. Eventually had to disabled the firewall just to get
the darn things to talk, as ticking the exceptions still refused
connections.

Once the firewall was disconnected, I could then at least connect, but it
kept refusing connections, with no apparent errors on the connecting
system (the connect button ungreys).

Should I be able to connect a 32bit Home Premium Vista RC2 to a 64bit Home
Premium Vista RC2?, and if so, has anyone managed to get it to work?

What are the error messages when you tried to connect Vista to Vista? Also,
Vista Home Premium 32 and 64 bit do not include the Remote Desktop client.
You need Vista Business, Enterprise or Ultimate Edition.

No error message, connect greys whilst it's connecting, then ungreys the
connect button after a few seconds. With the firewall enabled, it tells
me it cannot connect. So it's obviously connecting, but rejecting the
connection, without any message.

Strangly I have a "Remote Desktop Connection" icon in my Vista Home
Premium....

First, make sure you check the box: Allow Connections from computers running
any version of Remote Desktop (less secure) if you are using older versions
of RDP.

By default when you allow Remote Desktop connections the firewall SHOULD
automatically update and let RDP connections in/out.

I think you must have meant that only those versions can act as the host and
be *connected to* using Remote Desktop, as all versions of Windows since
Win'95 have a client available. Even the Mac has one.

I'm not sure how up to date this chart is, but it says that Home Premium
does not allow incoming connections using Remote Desktop. It would only
have the client to connect to editions that do include Remote Desktop
connectivity.

This would be just like how XP Home could not receive connections, but could
connect to XP Pro.

What's weird then, is there is a Terminal Services service running...

Yeah, that does seem weird. But I'm not surprised if the Home editions
would continue to not have this feature.

I don't know if this means anything, but I'm running Ultimate, and I have
a third service running that you don't seem to have called Terminal
Services UserMode Port Redirector.

Heh, I just thought of why you have that service running. XP Home must also
have had a similar service, as it is for connection for *Remote Assistance*.
XP Home users would be the ones that need Remote Assistance the most, and at
the same time Microsoft makes you have to upgrade to XP Pro (or Vista
Ultimate) for more advanced home users.

Surely Remote Assistance uses Remote Desktop/Terminal Services, so
Microsoft have simply hacked TS so you need to use invites to use RDP on
XPHome/Vista Basic.

It's not a real problem, as I have MSDN Subscription, so I caqn choose
which edition I run on my development machine, I decided on Vista Home
Premium, as I did not really want all the extra fluff that the other
editions came with.. Perhaps I need them, or Microsoft need to add
further granularity.
