Hi,
I have just tried installing RC2 on a machine that quite happily runs RC1
5728.
I went for the clean install option and after the first reboot I got a
flashing cursor in the top left of the screen before getting a blue screen
error after about 20 mins.
Error message is something to do with a power driver
My Set up is
Pentium 2.8GHz
1.5gig RAm
3 HDD's 80gig which I am installing to
200gig
120gig SATA
NVidia FX5200
Installing 5728 again may try to upgrade from there once it is all up and
running.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

When you say first reboot, are you talking about the first reboot after
install is complete, or during the install? I know Windows will update
after you get to the desktop and it might load a driver you don't want.

Hi Clark,
The blue screen came up when the install had completed.
I tried to install on another machine both as an upgrade and as a clean
install and got a black screen both times. This happened just after the
windows is starting for the first time message.
Spec of second machine is
Pentium 2.5Ghz
40 GB HDD
512Mb Ram
This machine will run beta 2 No problem but will not run any other build.
I am about to try to upgrade build 5728 to RC2 on my main machine, to see if
that gives me the blue screen error. If it does I may well give up completely.

Ok,
at the moment I have been trying to upgrade from build 5728 to RC2 since
0938(GMT) at 1129 I got the blue screen error again
"DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE"
I reset the machine and now it is completing upgrade.
What the hell is going on with this build????
It's now over 2 hours into the upgrade way too long for an upgrade to take,
and I'm just wondering if it is going to complete the upgrade or it's going
to crash again.
How can so many people be having trouble installing not only this build but
the previous ones. I accept that they are Beta's and that there will be bugs
and glitches but this one really does seem to be a step backwards.
I hope that MS read the posts on here and realise how many people are having
problems with installing on a wide variety of configurations. There are only
a few months left for them to sort this out if they are going to go to
general release on time.
If it doesn't work this time then I'll either go back to 5728 which runs
very well take about the same as XP to install, or I'll stick with XP.

Those who can install the builds without problems rarely mention that on
newsgroups. I have successfully installed every public build without
problems.

I'm pretty confident when I say that 99% of problems people are
experiencing are because of non-finished 3rd party drivers.

You might check for an "ntbtlog.txt" file and check it for drivers not being
loaded that you think should be. Maybe that would give you an indication of
what is affecting your install. It is a hidden file, so make sure you have
that enabled before you look for it. Should be in the Windows directory.

That's it I give up, 2 1/2 hours into the upgrade I got the black screen and
that was it end of story.
I have just put 5728 on as a clean install it's taken 25 minutes.
I'll try to install RC2 anymore it just isn't worth the hassle. If any more
versions come out I may try them I just don't know yet.
Will I buy Vista when it is released? If it was released as the 5728 build
then I would, but I won't buy it until everything is finally sorted ie,
installation issues across all configurations. But I think this is a long way
from being sorted out.
I'll plod on with the release I have for now until the next release.
