RC2 5744 Weather Sidebar Gadget does not work

I have a clean install of RC2 which works great apart from the fact that I
can not get the weather sidebar gadget to connect. It says service not
available. Is this a RC2 problem or are the weather servers just down?

Anyone experiencing the same problem?

//Hannes

PS: Connecting from Sweden via Bredbandsbolaget ADSL 2+ service (24/1)

No problems here, meaning I did my clean install of RC2 earlier this morning
and it connected to get information for Portland, OR. Any way to make it
manually update to see if it is really connected or just showing the last
retrieved data?

I changed my location (in ctrl panel regional and language options) to US
but I can not change language to English and keep using a Swedish keyboard -
no effect! Is there any specific "region" setting available apart from this?

//Hannes

When you say it doesn't work can you be more specific? Are you saing the
icon will not launch or that it will not refresh the temperatures of the
selected city?

Robert

There can be legal issues (our weather data may not meet governmental
requirements) or correctness issues (we don't have good weather data in our
gadget feed) that prevent us from showing weather for a particular region.
I don't recall any problems with Sweden, but I'm not really up to speed on
which regions are enabled and which ones aren't. Just because it used to
work doesn't necessarily mean anything - perhaps we showed data in the past
that we shouldn't have.

Oh, or the servers hosting the weather data may actually be down or
misconfigured - that's happened once or twice during the beta period.

These are all back-end service issues that don't effect the gadget bits in
the box - I would expect them to be resolved before RTM for the associated
languages. (Although I don't know enough about the issues to promise that.)

Just in case we do have some bug at play here, though, please do keep filing
the bugs when you see issues like this.

I am currently residing in the Netherlands and the feed seems to be just
fine. Thanks for the feedback!

I had RC1 and the weather gagdet worked perfectly (I live in New Haven, CT).
And ever since I upgraded to RC2, it stopped working no matter what US city I
entered. So I don't think it's a legal issue (US cities?) or a server issue
(showing the same error message for over two days?). Besides the weather
gagdet, all others work fine in RC2.

Weather gadget works fine here (UK)

Hi everyone!

Since yesterday I tried alot of different settings and in the end found a
way to get the weather gadget to work.

Problem:
The weather gadget only gave a "service not available in your region or
language" message. I could not even get data for the default "Redmond .
Furthermore I could not enter any new city in the search box (gadgets
options) since it also gave a "service not available" message. The result
was that the gadget only showed a blue background without any data.

Cause & Solution:
In the "Regional and Language Options" first tab: "Formats" the current
format was in my case set to Sweden. When I changed to "English (United
States)" it started to work again as soon as I reloaded the gadget. Changes
in the other tabs "Location"...etc did not seem to matter only the "Current
Format" setting had any effect.

If you can live with English settings you can get the gadget to work again
(of course you can alwayschange the details like comma, grouping etc by
usiing the "customize.." button.) If you can not I guess you will just have
to wait until RTM or longer...

Works for me in Ridgefield CT (RC2 x64 clean install).

It's 62 degrees.

does it give you the "cannot connect" error, or does it just not update the
weather in a timely fashion?

I'm surprised that that should be necessary. May have been some other
problem like your Internet connection.

Can get Indian [+uk] weather here in the uk [with RC2 5744] with uk or
Indian 'Regional settings no problem.

Now I have installed Vista Business RTM, and the same problem persists. I
understood that the key was "System Locale" (i.e. language for non-unicode
programs). If it was set to anything other than your regional/language
settings, the weather gadget would not work. However, this was totally
unnecessary and stupid. What if I need iTunes, or Realplayer to display
Chinese characters (which would require setting system locale to PRC China)
while I am living the US. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this situation.
Hope somebody at Redmond notice this and it shouldn't be that hard to fix at
all!!!

I have the same problem. (using RTM versin) The weather side bar seems to use
the windows locale setting to determine where to get weather from, and if it
is not set to English doesn't seem to work.

The locale setting is in:

Control Panel | Clock, Language, Region | Change the country or region

Click the 'Administrative' tab. You can click 'Change The System Locale'
This will not affect your input, this will only affect non-unicode
applications.

The location setting may also affect this.

My location was Australia, and System Locale set to English and weather
sidebar worked fine. However I use some Chinese applications that didn't work
under English locale setting, so have changed it to Chinese locale and after
that the weather sidebar stopped working.
