RC1 installs ok but hangs after 2 minutes

RC1 appears to install ok but it always goes to just over 50% CPU usage 128
seconds after being started. After a further minute or two it locks up
completely. If left alone it maybe recovers for a short while after 10
minutes or so, but then locks up solid shortly thereafter. Even if left
overnight stays locked up.

Before the 128 seconds slowdown it looks very good but after that point the
mouse and keyboard response becomes progressively slower until it dies
completely.

Using taskmanager I can clearly see that one of the two "CPU's" (its an
Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHZ with 1Gb RAM with HyperThreading so two "cpu's" in
Taskmanager) is running at maximum. CPU Usage is shown as around 53% BUT NO
PROCESS is shown as using this CPU Time (other than the Idle Process which is
running over 90%) This continues for a couple of minutes, with slow but
regular updating until it just freezes. It obviously looks like some
"unhealthy" system process is being started after 128 seconds - but what?

I have disabled disk file indexing, I can't see the Disk defragger running,
but the disk is intermittently active (in bursts probably 50% duty cycle)
during this time.

I think Beta 2 ran OK - I only installed that last saturday but I did run it
for a couple of hours and didn't notice any problems in this respect. I've
tried to re-install beta 2 but it now complains at the point when it's trying
to setup the boot sequence after most of the installation has completed. I'm
installing it to drive d: (XP MCE on drive d:) and have reformatted drive
between installations.

Anybody have any ideas whats wrong?

Well I'm really impressed by this news group.

Almost as unimpressed as I am with Vista.

It seems that, in the absence of any suggestions/help all I can do is solve
the problem myself.

Well, I have - sort of - and now I am able to run RC1 and see how it behaves.

I just hope nobody else has the same problem.
