Receive Error Message

Installation can not complete. Windows has encountered an unknow error. All
changes made to your system will be undone. Please restart the install.

You'll see this same type of error all over this newsgroup. You didn't
explain much, so I'll throw out some tips I used to get RC1 up and installed.
First, it is highly advisable to install this in a dual-boot setup (i.e. XP
on C:, and create a new partition called Vista wherever). Create that Vista
partition to be => 35GB (preferably => 40 GB). Mine installed okay on 29GB.
Do NOT install from the DVD (i.e. leaving it in the drive and re-booting).
Doing that, and you could lose your drive letter settings, and possibly XP
itself! Boot into XP, eject the Vista DVD, and put it back in the drive.
Now autorun should pick up the install. Choose "custom" install when asked.
Choose the Vista partition as your drive of choice. Enter your key, and walk
away (really - you'll go nuts staring at a screen for an hour). Providing
your DVD is a good burn, all should go well from here on out. After several
re-boots, and LONG delays, you should get a boot menu. RC1 looks great, and
runs fast (esp. Internet). Still gotta work out the UAC prompts (but UAC is
noticeably better). Good luck!

I get the same problem when I try to install Beta 2 (I can't do RC1 because
it doesn't support USB drives) The installation works but I get a screen that
shows for a second that says Microsoft Windows and Older Version. All that
works is Older Version and then it boots into Xp with that message. The drive
i'm using is a LaCie USB 160 GB

I am also trying to do this as a dual boot.

It is a daul boot have tried custom setup / clean install and also upgrade
over xphomesp2 running on my 2nd hd 30gb. The install works fine till the
final step and final reboot. windows vista background sceen appears and it
looks like its attempting to load.. then the error msg appears.

because you had restarted your computer during the installation

but I believe it's because the computer was just dead~~

I had the same problem a short time ago.
but I have solved it already

Here are my suggestions
1.format your destination partition.
2.begin your installation not in the Windows but before it(use boot from
CD-ROM)
3.take away as many plugs on your mother board as possible(especially in the
PCIs)

but be careful. If you use a dual boot and begin the installation
immediately after the formating without going to XP even once , the partition
name in vista WOULD NOT MATCH THOSE IN XP. for exmple ,if my XP is in the C
patition and I install vista in E. The vista will call the partition where it
is installed Partition C and the original C and D would be D and E etc.
