As a review of the messages in this forum would reveal, System Restore may
fail. It may fail because of user error, because a problem-causing factor
has affected it, or because the problem is the result of an addition to,
not a subtraction from, the system.
During the time I have had a Windows machine, more than a half year, my
system has failed to boot on three occasion, and on none has system
restore helped. One time the problem caused System Restore to register the
disk as full, when it was far from it. On the other two occasions I
succeeded in the restoration, but the restoration didn't result in a
bootable disk. I never lost data, which was backed up, but the restoration
process took the better part of a day.
I found another solution that claims never to fail, except where there's a
mechanical failure. It costs about $45, but when I couldn't boot a couple
of days ago, I had the system back up and running in ten minutes.
The product is a new one by Raxco, who also makes what appears to be the
best defragmenter on the market. It is called First Defense-ISR. I am
interested in others' opinions. There's a trial version at www.raxco.com
