Trying to get RAS to work on a Win2k Server acting as PDC. I attached a USB
modem, RAS is started, but modem does not answer. What am I missing.

I set autoanswer to 1, but the modem will not answer. I had a hyper terminal
session monitoring the com port and forced an answer using AT A, but after a
while i just got "not responding" message on my laptop. I am wondering if I
have RAS configured properly or not on server.

I've never used a USB modem, so you will need to track down why the
modem is not being instructed to set autoanswer to one. The "autoanswer"
is part of the configuration, and should pick up and negotiate the
connection, even if the "software" thats going to use it is not working
properly.

i switched to an external serial which had auto answer turned on and still
wouldnt pick up. I always thought you could have a modem powered up on your
desk not hooked up to anything and it would answer. Its weird that i can
force it to answer using AT A, but it won't auto answer. any ideas?

I think it still required a "live" phone line plugged into it.

Not HOOKED UP TO ANYTHING!?!?!?!? No it needs to be connected to sense
the ring voltage! IIRC ATS0=1 is the command to set autoanswer to 1
ring. Then go to another phone number and call up the phone number the
modem is wired to. It ought to pick up and start negotiation and then
finally drop when it figures out that there is not a modem to talk to.

I think the correct test would be to hook it up to a line and call it from
another phone while watching hyperterminal. When the line rings you should
see "Ring" in the hypertermial screen. If it doesn't answer on its own,
then you can type ATA and force it to answer,...if it does not answer then
their is a hardware problem or a driver problem.

Without Hyperterminal I used to remember sending AT commands directly to the
Com Port. If the modem was on Com2 the command would be "c:\ ATA > com2". I
don't remember if that worked very well or not,...its been a long time since
I fooled with modems.

OBVIOUSLY its hooked up to a phone line, I meant on the serial side. OK I
will try to be more clear this time. I have a serial modem hooked up to my
RAS server with Auto answer set to 1. The AA light is on. When I dial from
my laptop it just rings, the AA light flashes as per documentation for modem.
I started a hyperterminal session monitoring the com port and tried dialing
in again from laptop. RING shows up, but it does not answer. IF i type AT A
in HT, the modem answers, and begins comms, but then error on laptop says
remote network stopped responding. AFter the answer, I can see packets of
data in HT screen. Am I dealing with a baud rate mismatch issue, comport
settings problem, or RAS setup issue? THank you for your time and attention.

If the AA lite is on and the "RING" is being passed to HT then I'd say
there is something wrong with the modem itself. Then when you "force
answer" the other end eventually drops tends to indicate the "other end"
gave up on the "bad connection". At this point the modem is suspect in
my book. Going from memory you should also have a CD lite and an TR lite
on.

More info. I hooked the modem up to my desktop pc, installed PCAnywhere, and
set up modem host. When i did that, it turned AA off and turned TR on. When
I called in it worked like a champ, so the question is how to get TR light on
when its attached to server?

What you describe is that PCanywhere does not use the modem "autoanswer"
but instead intercepts the "ring" and issues ATA. If RAS is relying on
the modem to pickup (using AA) and CD to indicate a valid link you have
not tested the AA in the modem to be working.

Finally figured it out. While I had the RAS services running, The RAS Server
itself was not properly configured. It works like a champ now. Thank you
all for your help and patience.
