I was wondering if anyone here is using Raptors as their main drive for a Windows installation, and a separate SATA drive for apps/games etc...?

I've been considering getting a fast drive for my main windows partition next time I build a PC, but wondered if anyone could tell me if its worthwhile? Surely all the system files on a super fast drive would give great bootup times and nice loading performance?

i wouldnt buy a raptor at 10k, since i believe alot of people get problems with them, but the ones that work for people, they would really recommend them.

the preformance increase is not to much, considering what else you can buy with the same money on a large seagate or maxtor drive. hopefully someone can give more info then i can ^_^

See my sig :)

The Raptor drives are worth the extra money, I can definitely notice an increase in speed in just about everything. What more can I say?

My video editing system is almost identical to one in sig except it's a Gigabyte GA700N Pro 2 motherboard and the RAID config is 2 x Western Digital SATA 120Gb drives.

The Raptors knock spots off the 2 x SATA's.

I wouldn't recommend them lightly as they cost so much (I bought mine used at Hexus a while back) but imo they're really good.

How fast is your bootup speed Floppy? I'm really tempted to get some for my next system :)

I haven't got a clue :D

Want me to get the stop watch out? ;)

Seriously, I'll time it if you want.

Of course, boot up time is kinda dependent on how many apps are opening at boot.

i've read they can half boot times and as floppy said are damn fast at everything, i've been thinking of getting a couple of 36GB ones but at £150 a pair  im gonna save them for my new build

Ok, you got me curious, so I turned off machine, then switched on again.

Boot times:

To desktop: 44 seconds

All apps open: 1 minute, 4 seconds.

That any good?

I'll check mine tomorrow (just about to go to bed) and we'll compare :D

LOL...I timed mine there....55 seconds from power to the timer disappearing beside the curser. My POST takes a while, and its 10 seconds for my GPU to trigger. My Windows install is fresh, but theres a bit to be loaded at startrup.

I`m using a Samsung Spinpoint P120S. :) which is taking some of the raptors No.1 spots when used in RAID on an NF4 board.

Spinpoints are BRILLIANT drives. Have been running a couple of 80s (SATA) in a RAID 0 config for over a year now... still absolutely silent (only way to see activity is the case LED) and still very fast.

Yup, They IS silent :) Hard Disks may not be that sexy, but the Spinpoints are maybe about as close as disks get.
