Rapidantivirus

John

My PC is running XP SP3, with IE6.0

I have contracted a virus - Spybot identified it as RapidAntiVirus, and SAID
that it removed it, but it didn't. It is affecting my internet access (and I
don't know what else).

Among other things, it has disabled Security Center. I ran Services.msc,
but Start was disabled - when I went to Properties, I was able to set
Security Center to Automatic, but it immediately reverted to Disabled.

I am also unable to contact my AntiVirus (AVG) website; nor am I able to
connect with Spybot at their website. Other web sites are accessible, such
as Yahoo and Google.

I ran another antivirus program named SpyZooka, to no avail.

Do you have any thoughts on how I can clean my system of this virus?

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run additional checks for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Hi John, I am noticing a lot of viruses lately. I don't know what is going
on. I have to tell you I am NOT a computer wiz and this MAY sound like a
commercial but believe me I get nothing out of it - except trying to help
others like me! I started out with McAfee years ago. When that computer was
so slow I wanted to throw it out the window I gave it away and bought the one
I am typing on now. It had something like 600 viruses on it I was told by its
new owners. SO I bought Norton with the purchase of this one. I started
having problems like what you are describing. I go to school online so I NEED
my machine - and I had just spent 1700 on this so I was not playing. I saw
the StopSign commercial and called. I installed the softward via the internet
imediately and the tech ran it with me. (Did I mention I am NOT a comp
wiz!!?) Anyway we discovered a bunch of viruses on it. I do not go into music
or chat or games. I do research and that is it. Still after paying 199 for
Norton and running it repeatedly there were these debilitating viruses.
StopSign did a scan and they emailed me a personal cleaner for my computer. I
followed the directions and ran it and ta-da! My machine was running like a
charm. I deleted the Norton I had just installed for 199 and have not looked
back since. Any time I have a problem I call the tech and they are right
there. You can not go wrong. I have not got the knowlege to do all the scans
and such the other people are suggesting (by the way thanks I am copying that
info!) so StopSign is my answer. I thought I would share though I know
everyone has their preference. . I hope you get your problem fixed.

www.avast.com free anti virus is the best if you can download it and sae it
to your desktop and run a full scan it should remove or give you the option
to quaratine all infections. Let me know what happens.

Thanks for your help. I learned a lot from following all of your references.
What saved me was Avast. I am now clean.

I did not get to using StopSign. Avast solved my problem. But, I will check
this out. Thanks for your input.

Avast did the trick! Thanks,

YW, John, and thanks for your feedback.

I would strongly recommend posting your HijackThis log in an appropriate
forum for review by an expert. Avast may not have nailed everything.

PS: I'd also recommend replacing Avast with Avira AntiVir (if you can't
afford to purchase NOD32 or Kaspersky).
