I am searching on behalf of a Dr.'s office.

Why does it take 15-20 min. to obtain a patient's file
after entering password?

Since you gave us absolutely no information about your system, we haven't
got a clue.

This is really to general a question.
If that application is the only one going slow, perhaps you need to
uninstall/reinstall it.
Or contact the application manufacturer.

If many things are slow, try these:
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:

You might have try to contact the application vendor/developer. Databases
can perform slow due to incorrect configuration.

Talk to the supplier of your system, or to the vendor
of the application. If you have recently upgraded for
the Hipaa privacy requirements then it is possible that
something was not set up correctly.
