We have a problem of random characters appearing in blank fields in Windows
98. For example if I load Yahoo in IE 6.0 and try to type anything in the
search field, the computer starts typing text by itself and does not respond
to my commands. The characters seem random. It also happened when I clicked
on Windows help on the Start menu the and wanted to type in a phrase in the
search field. The following text automatically appeared characted by
character: uri08q7i0q7pureow. I've checked for viruses and everything seems
OK. I have all the Windows 98 and IE6 updates.
Thanks

If you "only" checked for viruses, well it wouldn't have
to be viruses in the current parlance. There are lighter-
weight infections: spyware, adware, foistware, malware...
if you haven't checked for them, search this newsgroup and
others for those terms and you'll find a wealth of
information and references. There are programs, and then
there are also Microsoft and other articles telling you
how to manually search and destroy.

And be careful what you click on when you have a browser
open. And try not to allow cookies. They're openly used
to customize what gets served up to you, based on
someone's criteria. What you could get served might be a
dialog box asking if you want to allow a download, a
certificate, ... and the default is OK, and it takes over
the mouse focus whily you're typing in a word processor
and hitting the spacebar or Return key...
