Power management options are always on. Why is it when I
leave XP running idle for 10-15min the hard drive starts
working like crazy for awhile, or until I start doing
something again? I don't have any viruses, and am behind a
firewall with a dynamic IP address. A defrag program
running behind the scenes?? I would like to disable this
feature, whatever it is.

I'm just taking a guess, but maybe there is some spy ware?
Have you used spybot and ad-aware, they are both free
downloads.

XP by default uses idle time to do a little defrag. Tweakui for SP1 has an
option to disable it.
