random restarting of machine

I am running XP Pro, and every now and then (once every
two days or so), my computer will restart for no reason.
What I'm doing with it when it restarts has been varied,
so I don't think it's related to that. When it reloads,
I get the error reporting window, and I report the
error. Then it comes up with "the problem is caused by a
device driver, but we can't tell which", or something to
that effect. The thing is, it has been a few months
since I have installed any new hardware. One time, I
noticed that it came up with "atapi.dll" as being the
problem, but that was only one time. Any help would be
appreciated.

Hi!
You might wanna try
1st to scan yr system with up to date anti virus software.
2nd try to uninstall the last updates performed before
your problem started. If you havn't installed any new
hardware or applications chances are there is an update
conflicting somewhere.

My first guess is that you are blue-screening and do not
know it, since the default in Windows XP is to restart,
rather than display a blue screen. Do this, and then you
will be able to troubleshoot the actual error message.

1. Right-click on "my computer" and choose "properties."
2. Click on the "advanced" tab.
3. Click "settings" button under "startup and recovery"
4. Under "system failure", uncheck the "Automatically
Restart" check box. This will now display the blue
screens.

Hi,
U more than likely have one of a number of viri. Do a
search on google for Stinger. Download it, run it on your
machine. Its a tool from network associates which scans
and removes about 35 of the most common viri.
After u have removed it ensure you apply the latest RPC
patches from Microsoft.
Hope that helps,
Kippy.
