For no apparent, no obvious reason, on a purely RANDOM basis, my Gateway
GT5220 w/AMD 64 X2 Dual Core RESTARTs. OS is XP-MCE. The machine is about
3 months old.
At first blush, does this sound like a software/OS problem -or- hardware??
The first thing to do is to disable the automatic restart on failure. Do
this in the Control Panel>System>Advanced>Startup and Recovery>Settings
and under System Failure uncheck "Automatically Restart". This should
give you a Stop Error on failure. Write down the Stop Error and research
it here:

You can also look in Event Viewer for clues:
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]
Generally random errors like you are describing are caused by hardware.
Here are some general hardware troubleshooting steps:

The fact that machine is new is irrelevant. In fact, if hardware is
going to fail it will usually do so pretty quickly or go for years.
Standard caveat: Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out
suspected parts with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing
yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your computer, take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local
equivalent of BigStoreUSA). Have all your data backed up before you take
the machine into a shop.
