Have just recently started experiencing random reboots and errors. Was
rock-solid many months, then suddenly,

At start-up, I get "win has just recovered from a serious error"
Every time.

I have not been able to decipher the .dmp file to see what is causing
the problem in that area. It WAS continual, where if I closed the
error window, it would reappear over and over anf a sys restore got
rid of that but it still comes at start.

Then, when doing something that isn't too memory intensive or, nothing
at all, my system just restarts.

Now, I know power supply troubles can cause this type of reboot at
times I have found, but it seems my 400w is working fine.

I also see that on restart at times, different icons that are normally
populating my systray, are hit & miss in loading. Also screwed my
internet connection up. Then I try & pick various restore points and
WIN XP says "your system cannot be restored"

I find no virus (Norton with latest defs) and little spyware that were
just cookies.

Ran fine with this hardware config a long time.
Win XP Pro
2.53 ghz P4
512mb Mushkin ddr
ASUS P4B533-E
1 Maxtor 40gb
2 Maxtor 120gb
1 Maxtor 160gb
Plex DVD burner
Plex CDR burner

Can enabling USB header or plugging in USB hub create trouble?
I had DL'd USB fix/update from ASUS site long ago but just recently
plugged in a mini hub after enabling the header.

I know I'm grasping but it driving me nutty.

Any help GREATLY appreciated!

A few suggestions:

- Use a multimeter to check the voltages from your power supply under
load.

- Get memtest86 or other utility and check your memory.

- Check that the heatsink hasn't come loose off the CPU and check all
fans are spinning.

- The USB ports supply power. If a device is shorting, could be the
cause for a shutdown. Simply unplug all USB devices for awhile. If a
reboot then occurs, that's not your problem.

- Are you overclocking?

Try standard fault elimination, remove the USB devices and see if it still happens, then remove any other devices you can, the
change over anything you can, eg use a friends ram etc. If all that fails reinstall XP on a seperate drive and see if it still
happens. If it's still happening then it must be the MB, CPU or Powersupply

There is a very new virus out which causes reboots (Sasser worm)
so make sure u r right up to date.

I just got back to read your messages and suggestions today May 8,
2004, so it may take me a day to look this over.

No overclock.
I'm an electrician so I can test properly I have a DMM.

Thanks for help !!!

I'll let you know what I find.

Do a specific check for Sasser. Also, run CW Shredder and HiJack
This.

Good luck.

This has just started happening to both my computer & that of a friend
just as you described. Sometimes, the old BSOD appears before reboot
but disappears too quickly to read the error info.

Sometimes the "Recovered for serious error" report will say that it wa
an unknown device driver. But I've been running the same configuratio
for many months with zero problems - no new devices added, no ne
software, etc.

At work, I can't install SP4 for Win2K. If I do, the computer crashe
continually, until I uninstall SP4.

Is a badly written "patch" from Microsoft unthinkable??

I think I have tracked down the culprit in my case at least, it
seems,(and I hope) when my PNY g4orce 4600 died from the bad capacitor
deal a few months back, I installed an ATI radeon 64ddr I had laying
around. When I got the new PNY card back from warranty replacement, I
left some drivers behind I guess.

One reason this may NOT be the problem is it puttered along for about
2-3 months after putting the PNY card back with no trouble and bam!

Searching MS knowledge base gets me the identical error and refers to
ATI being the bad actor.

Pretty hard to install the right driver for an ATI card now that I
have the PNY in there. Should I take it out, put the ATI card in,
install the right drivers, then uninstall them, take it out, put the
PNY back INSTALL THOSE SUCKERS, hell typing this crap is tiring me
out.

A lot of messing around just so I can use my c-puter properly.

You can do a search for ati...most of the ati stuff starts out that
way. Then rename, move, or both...whatever you want.

You can also do the same search in the registry.

Did you check out your Event Viewer?

Define 'crashes continually'.

Sure...but rare. I've had no problem with sp4...some have...many
haven't.
