Random Hang ups

Just got new comp, Shuttle AV49N w/ P4 2.66 512mb
kingston pc 2100, radeon 9700 pro. Just updated to
Service Pack 1a on Win XP and including all the latest
critical updates. Sometimes my computer would randomly
freeze, but it doesn't seem to occur when I'm playing
games. Is this a common bug that I can fix w/ a patch?
Or if not, how do I resolve it?

The Hotfixes listed below might need to be removed to fix
the freezing problem.
