random freezes since recent critical update

I'm runing windows XP home edition on an older machine (abit kt7raid 1 ghz
thunderbird processor). Since the last batch of updates, my machine has
been freezing at random times in different programs.

I've tried chkdsk and defrag and I've also checked for updates to video
drivers. I do have the latest highpoint controller bios/driver, but the
link I've been using for motherboard bios updates no longer works so I'm not
sure if that's current. I do run wprset to help keep the system cool.

I had this problem a while back with one of the critical updates (ended with
either 493 or 473) and removing it solved the problem and I just made a
point of refusing that one update. That update is longer listed as needing
to be installed and isn't in my uninstall list. I'm thinking it's been
rolled into one of the new updates but have no clue which one. Except for
that one glitch in the past and my new (same) problem, XP has been great on
this machine.

Any suggestions as to which update to remove or a work-around strategy would
be appreciated.

Thanks,
Cheryl

Removing patch 826939 seems to have fixed the problem.

p.s. Microsoft--are you listening? 811493 froze my machine even after you
"fixed" it. Your roll-up patch is doing the same thing. There is still a
problem with that one.
