My system (wich is athlon and via based) was running absolutly
perfect. it never crashed...I could leave it running for days with no
problems. I recently bought a new WD JB1200 hard disk and started with
a freshly installed win xp. Now, the system crashes randomly without
leaving a message in the system log. First, it automatically rebooted,
but then I turned that function off in the system properties. As I
expected, it just freezes completly. The mouse-arrow doesn't move, the
sound is looped (not actually playing), nothing, nada... It happens in
games or in Windows itself. I can either work for hours or just for 5
minutes when it happens. All my drivers are pretty recent. I can't
link the problem to any application.

Maybe somebody can link this to a solution?

Also boot the Recovery Console from the CD after the crash. Run "chkdsk x: /p" on your x: partitions. Run "map" to see their names. Run "exit" to reboot.

Check the hard drive cable and connections carefully. Try a different cable if you have one. Make sure the settings in the BIOS for the drive are enabled or set to auto in the first section and in the section that specifies the UDMA access. See if the drive will work properly without a secondary on the cable.

To prove that the new HDD is the culprit, put back your old HDD if that was
working before the change. If you only have the new one, run diagnostics
from the disk manufacturer. It is not unknown that new disk can be
defective!

As soon as your system goes into a stable mode, run the on-line virus scan
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
You never know.
