I have read your help given to dOinK on "Can't move "Shared Documents"
thread on June 21, I believe. I need a bit more assistance if possible,
Ramesh.
I am trying to move these same folders to another partition on my C drive.
(I'm amazed that MS made no provision for this, since so much advice is
given regarding keeping one's OS on its own partition. I did accomplish this
but now realize that my digital photos are going to be a problem sharing
them from laptop to desktop via Shared Documents, since it appears Windows
insists on actually moving these pictures and other files to the C drive,
which will soon expand it beyond limits. Why MS did not just allow these
folders to be referred to via shortcut, I don't know. Or maybe they did but
I haven't figured out how to configure various user settings to accomplish
it. In any case, moving the folders seems much better.)
I read the advice about the changes in the registry needed, but I'm
still a bit unclear. Will making these changes actually move the folder from
C: to (E for me, or do I need to create another SharedDocs folder on E:
first and physically move the files from C to E? Same question concerning
the other CommonPictures folders etc: Do I create a new My Pictures folder
on E: or just point the new reg key in User Shell Foldersto the My Pictures
folder in the E:\My Documents folder where it exists now?
Also, I assume that for all these new strings to be created in User
Shell Folders, I need to make changes to the values in the Shell Folders
section of registry also? And I give the same new paths to each string value
in both Shell Folders and in User Shell Folders?
Am I safe in assuming that I only have to make these changes to my
desktop system, which has partitioned drive(s), or will I also have to make
changes to my laptop as to pointing the Shared Documents on the desktop when
I network these systems?
Thank you so much for your help. I'm sorry to be so dense on this, but I
really want to accomplish these changes correctly without screwing up my
system.
