I have read your help given to dOinK on "Can't move "Shared Documents"
thread on June 21, I believe. I need a bit more assistance if possible,
Ramesh.
I am trying to move these same folders to another partition on my C drive.
(I'm amazed that MS made no provision for this, since so much advice is
given regarding keeping one's OS on its own partition. I did accomplish this
but now realize that my digital photos are going to be a problem sharing
them from laptop to desktop via Shared Documents, since it appears Windows
insists on actually moving these pictures and other files to the C drive,
which will soon expand it beyond limits. Why MS did not just allow these
folders to be referred to via shortcut, I don't know. Or maybe they did but
I haven't figured out how to configure various user settings to accomplish
it. In any case, moving the folders seems much better.)
I read the advice about the changes in the registry needed, but I'm
still a bit unclear. Will making these changes actually move the folder from
C: to (E:) for me, or do I need to create another SharedDocs folder on E:
first and physically move the files from C to E? Same question concerning
the other CommonPictures folders etc: Do I create a new My Pictures folder
on E: or just point the new reg key in User Shell Foldersto the My Pictures
folder in the E:\My Documents folder where it exists now?
Also, I assume that for all these new strings to be created in User
Shell Folders, I need to make changes to the values in the Shell Folders
section of registry also? And I give the same new paths to each string value
in both Shell Folders and in User Shell Folders?
Am I safe in assuming that I only have to make these changes to my
desktop system, which has partitioned drive(s), or will I also have to make
changes to my laptop as to pointing the Shared Documents on the desktop when
I network these systems?
Thank you so much for your help. I'm sorry to be so dense on this, but I
really want to accomplish these changes correctly without screwing up my
system.

You will need to create the new folders, the registry entries only point to the locations. Any files and folders currently in the old location will need to be moved manually.

The 'Shell Folders' and 'User Shell Folders' keys should contain the same paths. The only difference being 'Shell Folders' uses a REG_SZ type and 'User Shell Folders' uses a REG_EXPAND_SZ type.

Not sure about the laptop/desktop issue. I'm guessing that if the share path is thru \\ComputerName\ShareFolderName, you'll be ok. If it was \\ComputerName\Documents and Settings\All Users\My Documents, it would need to be updated.

Thanks, Keith. Sounds good. I'll give it a try and let you know what
happens. :-)

Keith, I just noted that you mention the REG_EXPAND_SZ type of string.
This is not what Ramesh mentioned in his advice. So is it necessary to make
the strings in the User Shell Folders into expandable string values, or will
it work the same way using just the REG_SZ in this location?
Thanks again for you help!

If you use %variable% then must be reg_expand else if you are using c:\somefolder then doesn't need to be (but can).

Thanks Keith and David.

D H,

TweakUI for some reason, reads the value but does not update the shared folders path. Just to mention that this entire tip was from Keith Miller and he magically appears here.

- Create a REG SZ named "CommonMusic" and set it's path
- Create a REG SZ named "CommonPictures" and set it's path
- Create a REG SZ named "CommonVideo" and set it's path

As David said, if you're using Environment Variables (say %Userprofile%), you need to use REG_EXPAND_SZ or else the OS takes the 'given' value as the folder and does not expand the environment path. As you're redirecting to a different drive, you're unlikely to use Env.Variables (though it may be possible).
