Your right, there are lots available (through google), but they all seem to
be shareware or otherwise hobbled.

I should also have mentioned that the one I referenced above (by Christiaan
Ghijselinck) is the ramdisk used by Bart Lagerweij on his "Bart's PE" disk
and does seem to work very well. The version that goes up to 2GB is
nagware (he asks for a donation to remove the nag).

Here's another freeware ramdisk that claims to go up to 2GB

Warning: In my experience, and also in the experience of others from what I
researched, installing a RamDisk on (Sp1) XP results in all your System
Restore points being deleted each time there is any activity on the RamDisk!
Of course, if you don't use SR, then not a problem.

I use a free one from AR Soft:-

I have used it over a year now and it is wonderful. Very stable and
reliable. I have configured my TEMP -directory there and also
temporary Internet files. This makes my system run much faster and
crap is deleted with every reboot (I have 1200 megs RAM reserved to
RAM-drive

With AR-soft RAM-drive this has never happened. I have configured it
to show as a ram drive to windows, so windows knows not do interfere
restore with it. And has been ok with SP1 and SP2.

While reading the homepage of the Daemon tools program, I found that
they have a new partnership with Rocketdivision, and as an outcome, two
new programs, one of which can be a ramdisk, too, but rather is a
combination of remote drive management, mounting and storage sharing
tool (hey, dotNET isn't everything :)
(one line)

But that one is a jack of many trades, and as a result, is nothing like
Boomer-sized.

Well you have better luck with it than I do!

I also use AR_soft RamDisk but as I said before, any activity on the RamDisk
and all System Restore points are wiped (each time there's a corresponding
message in the System Event log). I just tried it again now (first time with
SP2) and it erased all my System restore points as before. When I researched
this problem some months ago, I found a number of references to other people
experiencing the same problem. Wouldn't be the first time computer behaviour
has left me scratching my head....

Why would anyone use SR when there's ERUNT? The latest version makes a
folder automatically based on date and can delete old backups
automatically. So I just nncronlite to run ERUNT every other day. Perfect!
