Win 98 (&SE)used to crash if you placed more than 512mb
on the system. Does this restriction still run true for
XP Pro? Thanks for any help you can give.

The problem was easily solved in Windows 98. Windows 2000 and XP have no
problems with 512MB-4GB of RAM.
with shed loads of RAM.

Cheers

you need to be careful about loading tons of ram in there. the only problem
is your motherboard. some motherboards can only handle up to 1 gig and
others 2. usually only the expensive ones can handle up to 4 gig of ram.
hope this will help.

Before purchasing a shed load, XP runs well with just 512mb..

For the majority of users, I agree with your 512MB recommendation. For
memory intensive applications, 1GB or perhaps more is often called for.

Thank you sir/madam. I'm off to the shops to pack my PC

A couple of points regarding adding more RAM:

1. Adding more memory can noticeably improve performance only if the
added memory results in reduced usage of the virtual memory pagefile.
Therefore if the pagefile is not being used to any significant extent
then adding more memory will not provide a significant improvement.
This applies regardless of how much or how little RAM is currently
installed in the computer.

2. If you go beyond 3 gb of RAM with Windows XP you need to add a
/3gb switch to the BOOT.INI file.

Good luck

Note however that dll's, although they are swapped in
and out of RAM, normally do not occupy space in the
page file.

No.

ANd all that was needed in Win98 was a very simple extra line in
system.ini anyway
