RAM Usage Management

I have recently upgraded to Vista, and i really like the new look. I don't
have any performance issues when running normally, but when i work with
graphics, the software starts to lag.

I understand that large graphics tend to slow down the system. However, from
what i'm seeing on the CPU meter, even when my graphics are lagging, my RAM
usage is never higher than 55%. If the remaining 45% of RAM is free, is there
a way to manage the settings so that my lagging program can make use of it?

Of course it's also possible that the lagging is caused by the internal
structure of the program. But i would still be interested to find out if i
can change how much RAM a program can use.

Thanks in advance.

I'm familiar with that when accessing large files.
Win Mail accessing large newsgroups can cause
a system hang, for want of a better term, for
a minute or so.

What are your system specs and what program are you using?

LOL I tried transferring stuff on my LAN and Vista takes forever if it is
alot of small files. Sending to my machine is very fast, but this Vista
machine is crap when sending stuff. I had 300 meg of docs and pics in a
folder, but try and send that folder over the network and Vista sits there
for almost an hour calculating the speed and then craps out.

I can get around it by zipping or raring into 1 file, but it really is not
too good. I know a few other ppl with this issue, so at least I know it is
not just me. It really seems to struggle if you have more than 1 file,
although size does not seem to be an issue.

If you have Photoshop have you gone into File>Preferences and set up your
Scratch Disks and Memory Usage?

I know how to set memory usage in Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter - and i
do not have any problems with them. The lagging program is openCanvas.

CPU: Pentium 4 2.66G
RAM: 1.5G
Running 32-bit version of Vista Ultimate.
The program in question is openCanvas 4PE from portalgraphics.

Straight from the horses mouth
"At this moment, openCanvas does not support Windows Vista formally. It is
in a plan sometimes soon."
http://www.portalgraphics.net/en/products/oc4/environment/

The problem is opencanvas and not vista

That said, You can try to run in compatibility. Right click the program exe
file and select the compatibility tab, If that does not work then you will
have to deal till the developer makes a vista release.

Also try running with elevated administrator priviliges.
"When having openCanvas trial and registering it with Windows XP, User
rights should be more than Power Users.
User rights should be PowerUsers or Administrators to use openCanvas after
registration."

"

Thanks for going through to look into the program. (In fact, i have passed
the stage of getting it running.) My question though, is if i can manage my
RAM usage to assign more memory to run a specific program.

No, The RAM will be allocated to where it is needed most,
That being said you can bring the process to a higher priority.
BUT I would recommend against this as it could freeze your system.

If you want to try to give it a higher priority and see if it works

Open task manager and find the programs process and right click on it
and select "Set Priority" - Above Normal is the highest I would recommend
trying.

Could also be a bug in the program since it was not written
for vista and vista uses all new code base. In which case there
is nothign you could do about that.

Thanks a lot for all the advice. Priority level is also something i've tried
before. Though I'm lucky that my computer didn't freeze, it doesn't seem to
have much effect. But still, thanks a lot!

FYI, slow file transfers over a network is a known problem. I believe there
is a not regression tested hotfix for it.
